Alignment stick drills to improve your golf game
Alignment sticks are the most simple but most effective training aid, and I believe you can use alignment sticks to improve your golf game.
Because they’re called ‘alignment sticks’ golfers may think this is there only duty, but as I will show you in this blog, alignment sticks can help you to:
Strike the ball better
Stop your slice or hook
Set up to the ball better
Start the ball on a better line
Give you feedback of movements
Visualise different shots
And much more.....
There’s a reason why Tour pros are so consistent and why they always set up to the ball the same every time - it’s getting the fundamentals correct by repeating drills every day, and it’s how alignment sticks can help. You might see lots of good players using alignment sticks but my customers often comment that:
I don’t know how to use alignment sticks
I’m not sure how it can improve my game - what should I be doing?
I know one drill, but there must be other things I can do
This is where I can help.
Five top tips for using alignment sticks to improve your game
The Obvious Alignment
Place one alignment stick horizontally in front of your feet and the other at a 90 degree angle, on top of the other stick, in the opposite direction. Place your ball 10cm past the end of this alignment stick.
Step up to the horizontal stick with your feet either side of the vertical stick.
Use this drill to improve set up to the ball.
The Swing Plane Fixer
This drill will help if you come over the top and swing out to in.
Place an alignment stick in line with your swing - under the club if you come over the top, and the opposite if you come too far underneath. Keep the club on the outside of the stick as you swing.
The Strike Improver
Want to improve how you strike the golf ball?
Place an alignment stick 15cm behind your ball and using a mid-iron, hit the ball without hitting the stick. This will stop you hitting behind the ball and thinning the ball, and will improve your angle of attack.
The Body Rotator
With a wedge, hold an alignment stick alongside the club. Using a half backswing and half follow through, try not to let the stick hit your body. This will help keep the body rotating, improve your strike and consistency.
The Clubface Controller
Place two alignment sticks either side of the ball both aiming down at the target, just wider than the width of the golf club. This will make club face alignment clearer, encouraging you to hit through to the target and improve control.
Spending 20 minutes with alignment sticks every time you’re at the range will really improve your consistency, strike, control and overall golf game.
