Celeb-spotting at Wentworth PGA
On Wednesday 23 May, myself, PGA Professional Colin Murray and a bus-load of golfers visited the very prestigious and famous Wentworth Club - for the BMW PGA Championship.
This European Tour event is held annually from Thursday to Sunday at Wentworth in Virginia Waters in Surrey, with a Celebrity Pro-Am Tournament taking place on the Wednesday. In recent years, its really taken off - attracting some very familiar and famous faces, including Jamie Redknapp, Vernon Kay and Chris Evans. There's a great mix of footballers, singers, Hollywood actors, comedians and more.
We arrived at about 10.30am and headed straight to the 18th hole, to catch the end of Rory McIlroy's round. Being a Man United fan, it was a great start for me as we saw Rory alongside Paul Scholes, Teddy Sherringham and Michael Carrick.
At the tournament you can walk around the course, take a seat in the grandstands, follow your favourites or head over to the tented village to try out some equipment or do some shopping. We carried on around the course, watching lots of groups coming through. We watched some great golf and some indifferent shots, mainly from the celebrities.
Vernon Kay spoke to every single person who asked for a selfie and genuinely seemed a really nice guy. (He later liked my post on Instagram so we're basically friends now). We bumped into Tommy Fleetwood, Peter Schmeichel, Matt Le Tissier and Pep Guardiola. But my favourite part of the day was to meet a very big actor; Damien Lewis from Homeland, Billions and Band of Brothers. His ball landed right next to us so we had a photo and a chat - I didn't actually realise he was English until that point!
We headed back to the car park around 6.00pm and headed home. The whole day was brilliant. Just being at Wentworth is an experience, but seeing the Pros and celebrities was really good fun.
Who knows, maybe one day I'll be playing there, rather than watching...
